A Brief History

Oughtred Coffee & Tea was originally founded by John William Oughtred (Sr.) in Nanaimo, BC. The year was 1973 and the coffee industry was certainly still in its infancy on Vancouver Island. From these humble beginnings grew a BC family success story that now spans into its second generation of Oughtred family ownership in British Columbia.

Today, son’s Michael and John (Jr.) have taken over the reins of this local, specialty coffee business and with the help of their dedicated team, have helped transform Oughtred Coffee & Tea into one of Western Canada's most sustainable, specialty coffee companies. However, the family (and company) still calls British Columbia home; with construction of a new Head Office recently completed in Victoria (Vancouver Island) and in March 2015, a major upgrade is scheduled for their Carbon Neutral Roasting Works located in Delta (lower mainland). Add to this a new distribution center just opened in Kelowna and it is clear that Oughtred Coffee & Tea has strategically built the necessary infrastructure to support a diverse range of customers all across Western Canada. "Many things have changed over the last 41 years," remarks CEO Michael Oughtred "however, our continued commitment to quality, freshness, customer service and responsibility has not, as we push to build a company and culture that our father would be proud of."

We thank you for considering our company and look forward to serving your business in the future.

In 1973, John William Oughtred actually purchased the company, later branded as "EZE BREW COFFEE", from the Hudson Bay Company out of Vancouver, BC. According to the record of sale, the company boasted a total of 6 customers, all of which were located on Vancouver Island. After the sale was completed, John set out to meet his new customers and quickly discovered that only 3 were actually interested in coffee service. Hence the humble beginnings of Oughtred Coffee & Tea...
